WSOP Event #1 – Andrew Cohen Wins the Bracelet
The 40th Annual World Series of Poker kicked off Wednesday with the $500 buy-in Casino Employee’s Event. This bracelet event is limited to those that have valid proof of employment within the casino industry. 866 players put up the required buy-in to take their shot at poker greatness.
Among those in the field included Women’s Poker Hall of Famer Marsha Waggoner, two time WSOP bracelet winner Pat Poels, and legendary tournament director Jack McClelland. Jack helped to run the WSOP from 1985 to 1989 and is the current tournament director for the Bellagio.
Of course, none of the “name” players would go on to make the money in this event, leaving it to the rest of the field to carry the torch. Casey Kuhn took the chip lead early in the day with 92,000 in chips. Play would continue until the bubble burst. By the end of the day, Cesar Chavez would emerge as the chip leader with 107,700 in chips. Casey Kuhn would be right behind him with 101,300.
81 players would return for Day 2 of the event. Action was fast and furious as illustrated by a big hand with Jesse Duangrudeesawat. He had three players all-in and held pocket tens. His tens held and three players were eliminated in one swoop. In fact, in just over 30 minutes, 20 players were eliminated in the event.
Andrew Cohen would emerge as the new chip leader during Day 2. At the dinner break, he sat with 362,000 in chips, which was 130,000 chips more than his nearest competitor.
Day 1 chip leader Cesar Chavez would be eliminated in 11th place when Casey Kuhn was able to turn a straight to outdraw the pocket jacks of Chavez.
John Williams took a brutal beat to become the final table bubble boy. He moved all-in on the flop after flopping a set of tens on a 10-9-7 board of all hearts. Sammy Porter held Ah-10d and was on the nut flush draw. Unfortunately for Williams, both the turn and river were hearts and he was eliminated in 10th place.
This first bracelet event of 2009 was only a two day event so players had to play to the bracelet. These were the final 9 players of event 1 and their chip counts shortly after play had started:
Andrew Cohen 425,000
Sammy Porter 388,000
Casey Kuhn 385,000
Bobby Rooney 371,000
John McAvoy 345,000
Jun Dulay 222,000
Ferdinand Boleski 192,000
Grant Wasul 160,000
Paul Peterson 120,000
Casey Kuhn, who was chip leader at one point on Day 1 would eventually finish third in this event. He was all in on a K-5-3 flop holding K-4 against the 5-2 of Andrew Cohen. Cohen would spike a third five on the turn to eliminate Kuhn.
Although starting the day as one of the short stacks, Paul Peterson was able to make a tremendous comeback and wound up heads-up with Andrew Cohen. However, in the end, Cohen’s chip lead was too much for Peterson. The final hand saw Peterson move all in with A-Q offsuit and Cohen called with pocket sixes. Peterson was unable to spike an ace or a queen and Andrew Cohen became Event #1’s Champion.
Andrew Cohen took home $83,778 and the first bracelet of this 2009 World Series of Poker.
