WSOP Europe Ratings Drop by 25%

The ratings for the World Series of Poker Europe are in and the news isn’t good. Ratings are down 25% year over year for the event. Of course, the last couple of weeks have been an anomaly in competition. Two weekends ago, the Super Bowl was broadcast to an audience that was the largest in television history in regards to number of viewers. Then last weekend, you had both the NBA All-Star game and the Winter Olympics.

Poker News Daily contacted ESPN, and this was their statement on the ratings. “It’s no surprise that the ratings are down this year when we’ve been up against the Olympics, the Super Bowl, and the NBA All Star Game. We’re pleased with the production.”

Ratings for the World Series of Poker Europe continue a trend started by the final table of the WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas. The November Nine saw a drop of 0.1 percent year over year. While this number is not big at all, the ratings were a bit of a surprise to many seeing that Phil Ivey was among the final table participants.

Whether or not the dip in ratings will continue remains to be seen. The Olympics conclude soon and no other major sporting events start for several weeks. Baseball is just getting ready to begin spring training, so no significant baseball programming will occur for a while yet.
