Rules for 2010 WSOP Released
The rules for the 2010 WSOP were released last week. Among them were several key changes. The one that has received the most media attention is rule 55. Part of the rule states, “All cell phones and other voice-enabled and “ringing” electronic devices must be turned off during tournament play. Players not involved in a hand (cards in muck) shall be permitted to text/email at the table, but shall not be permitted to text/email any other
player at the table.” This change is a direct result of the twitter phenomenon that swept the WSOP last summer.
Also changed is the handling of stack from players who do not show up in a timely fashion. Now, if a player is not in his seat by the end of the registration period, his stack will be removed from play, the buy-in taken out of the prize pool, and the funds held for the player to pick up at a later time.
Rule 37b addresses an age old problem at the WSOP. It states “All participants are entitled to expect civility and courtesy from one another at every Tournament table and throughout the Tournament area. Any individual who encounters behavior that is not civil or courteous — or is abusive in any way — is encouraged to immediately contact a Tournament official. This shall include, but is not limited to, any player whose personal hygiene has become disruptive to the other players seated at their table. The determination as to whether an individual’s personal hygiene is disruptive to other players shall be determined by the Tournament Staff which may, in its discretion, implement sanctions upon any such player who refuses to remedy the situation in a manner satisfactory to Rio.” Essentially, if you stink and someone complains, you must rectify it or take a penalty.
Otherwise, most of the remaining rules are either unchanged or have been expanded for clarification, such as what defines when a person is “at their seat.” For a full list of rules, check out the WSOP’s website at http://www.wsop.com/pdfs/2010/2010-WSOP-Rules.pdf.
