Professional player and former WSOP bracelet winner Amir Vahedi passed away January 8th at the age of 48. Details about his death are still unclear, but the primary cause is suspected to be complications from diabetes. Word was being floated around on Twitter on Saturday night and ultimately confirmed by Mark Seif in his blog. Vahedi is survived by two brothers, a sister, two daughters, and a son.

Vahedi was born in Tehran and after serving in the Iraq-Iran war, he relocated to the United States. Vahedi started playing poker professionally in the 90’s but experienced some of his greatest success at the 2003 World Series of Poker. Vahedi made three final tables during the Series, including his first and only bracelet and the Main Event. Vahedi won a $1,500 NL Holdem event for $270,000. Later in the series, Vahedi made the final table of the Main Event where he finished 6th for a $240,000 payday. The event was eventually won by Chris Moneymaker.

For his career, Vahedi had over 20 tournament wins and over $3.3 Million in tournament wins. Known as one of the “good guys” in poker, both players and officials gave their condolences for the loss. Former WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack stated, “Amir was one of my favorite people in poker…. This is so sad, RIP my friend, your laugh will always be missed!” Nolan Dalla stated, “Amir was one of poker’s nicest players and most colorful personalities. His life story was right out of a novel, immigrating to this country from a repressed war-torn region, ultimately becoming one of the most beloved people in an entire industry.” Annie Duke stated, Still thinking about Amir. What a nice, sweet, funny soul. I keep picturing him with his cigar and his smile. 2 things he always had.” 11-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth stated, “Amir Vahedi Rest In Peace my old friend…Amir was one of the nicest, gentlest guys on tour, and everyone loved him…Very sad, diabetes…”
