Stern’s wife also decided to become a professional poker player after watching her husband play. Between them they have won four World Series of Poker gold bracelets with Max winning three so far.

Stern first appeared at the World Series of Poker in 1989 where he finished 6th in the $1500 Seven Card Razz event and picked up prize money of $9540. Ever since then he has been playing at the major tournaments and has been cashing regularly. His first WSOP bracelet came in 1995 in the $1500 Omaha 8 or Better event for which he netted $140,400. In 1997 he picked up $378615 in WSOP tournament earnings as well as his other two gold bracelets. His other cash that year was in the $1500 Seven Card Razz event where he finished in 3rd spot.

So far Stern’s earnings from all tournaments total almost one and a half million dollars. He has cashed 28 times at the World Series of Poker and these cashes have netted him over $800,000.

He continues to play tournament poker and it is his love of the game which he attributes to his success. Even though he has been left disappointed many times at the table, he continues to play with enthusiasm.
