Shirey first cashed at the World Series of Poker in 1987 when he finished 6th in the $1500 Limit Hold’em event. He picked up prize money of $21,262. However this was soon to be put in the shade when at the same tournament he picked up his first gold bracelet and a further $171,600 in prize money. He cashed a further four times from 1988 to 1991 (one each year) before he picked up his second and third WSOP gold bracelets in 1995. These four cashes earned him a total of $81,350.

However this amount paled into significance when in 1995, not only did he pick up another two gold bracelets at the World Series of Poker but he earned over three and a half times this amount in two days by finishing 1st in the $2500 Omaha Pot Limit and $2500 Hold’em Pot Limit events.

Although he has not won another bracelet at the World Series of Poker since 1995 he has continued to play in these tournaments and has cashed 26 times there in total. These 26 cashes have seen him pick up WSOP prize money of almost $800,000. Total tournament prize money is estimated to be almost one and a half million dollars.

Shirey continues to play in the major poker tournaments. He lives in Florida and has six children.
