Thang “Tiger” Luu
Thang ‘Tiger’ Luu is a poker player who doesn’t need to doubt that he’s at the top of his game. He’s already performed one of the greatest feats in poker by winning two WSOP bracelets back to back, and a very significant amount of cash to accompany those coveted accessories. What makes Luu’s story interesting is that he started out on the other side of the table, as a young dealer in Las Vegas.
Now 34, Thang Luu is a Vietnamese American who lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. A modest person, he often expresses surprise at his phenomenal achievements within the game. His preferred game is Omaha, and he’s confessed that he often finds the 2-card game of Hold’em to be boring by comparison. He’s known to prefer limit games at times, but whatever he plays, others around the table are guaranteed a challenge with this very skillful player.
‘Tiger’ Luu arrived in the U.S. at the age of 17 and got a job as a card dealer in Las Vegas, where he was bitten by the gaming bug and the bright lights. His lifestyle is now a far cry from his humble beginnings, as he regularly wins 6-figure sums. Not without his share of controversy, there has been speculation about aggression toward dealers and of bans from particular gaming houses.
Whether ‘Tiger’ Luu goes on to further achievements or not it’s clear that no one can detract from his significant achievements to date. As a winner of two WSOP bracelets he’s earned his place in the poker hall of fame. His is a success story of the very best kind, because it’s one we can now watch develop on the strength of significant early successes. Whatever the future hold it’s obvious that any prospective opponents need to be aware that Luu is never very far from cleaning up at the final table.
