Susie Isaacs
One of the foremost role models for women in the highly competitive game of professional poker is Susie Isaacs. She’s written several books on the subject of poker and she’s recognized around the world as an expert in the game. She was born in Nashville and she first played poker at the very young age of 4, when she surreptitiously got involved in games her brother was playing, even though she could barely count. She’s reputed to have once sold her comic book collection to get involved in the game, and that really sounds like a young version of this incredibly committed player.
Susie moved to Las Vegas in 1986 and sought out some ladies poker tournaments as a means of recreation. She was content to let her husband be the breadwinner of the family and saw poker as a means of being sociable with other members of her community. After she went through her second divorce in 1990, things changed. She realized that she’d do well to try to support herself through poker, given her obvious skills, and that’s just what she did.
Susie certainly put the required effort into learning the game. She went through the gamut of losing, breaking even and finally winning to emerge as a true pro player. She’s won some of the most esteemed prizes in the game, including two WSOP bracelets, of which she’s rightly very proud. She’s admired by male and female players alike, and she continues to win at the very highest level of the game.
Susie’s first bracelet win came in 1996, when she won the $1K WSOP Women’s Seven Card Stud Event, to take home $42K. The second came the very next year when she won in the same $1K Women’s Seven Card Stud Event, this time to take home $38K. Her Live tournament winnings to date amount to $430K and she remains a very prominent character in the game.
