Phi Nguyen
With tournament career earnings of over $1.8Million and two bracelets to his name, Hung ‘Phi’ Nguyen is a professional poker player with a big reputation. He’s a Vietnamese American player with a huge presence around the table. He considers his moves carefully and often forces the hand of other players, much to their chagrin. He’s known for some public rivalries and for the intensity with which he plays cards, and he’s a danger to any big names around a final table.
Phi Nguyen won his first valuable bracelet back in 2003 when he came top in the $2.5K No Limit Hold’Em event, to win $222,800. In this particular game he beat such eminent players as Mike ‘The Mouth’ Matusow, who has remained a long-term poker nemesis for Nguyen. He was justly proud of this first prestigious bracelet win, but of course it wasn’t enough for this ambitious player who is always trying to excel. A year later, in 2004 he won his second bracelet in the $1.5K No Limit Hold’Em Shootout to win $180K. Players in the game at which he won this second bracelet included such luminaries as Daniel Negreanu, John Juanda, J.C.Tran and Kirill Gerasimov. He beat them all in heads-up play and deserved his illustrious victory.
Nguyen is a stealthy player with sharply honed skills and a natural talent for the game, as many of his more gracious opponents will testify. Audiences at final tables at which he’s present, and which feature other big names can expect epic battles. TV audiences know his face and the skill with which he eliminates his opponents around a poker table. No Limit Hold’Em is his game of choice and he doesn’t even need to doubt his abilities. His two bracelets prove his skills beyond doubt, if any proof were needed. His is a real success story, and he’s an inspiration to many rising stars in the game.
