This professional player is known on the circuit for his interesting method of stacking chips, his bluffing tactics and his loose style of play, and for being the most successful player ever in the WSOP. It’s fair to say that he’s a real character in the game, with style and skills to match. He moved to the U.S.A. from Spain towards the end of the 1990’s in order to play poker, and his relocation has brought him incredible financial rewards. It’s clear that he has a natural talent, but that he also works hard at improving his game.

Born in 1972 in Ecuador, Carlos Mortensen has a unique style of play. Mortensen’s live tournament earnings to date total over $9.8Million, which is an astonishing amount of money by anyone’s standards. His 21 WSOP cashes account for $2,427,777 of that amount, making him major player on the circuit by anyone’s standards.

Mortensen has won two WSOP bracelets, an achievement that speaks for itself in the world of high-stakes poker. His first bracelet win was back in 2001, when he emerged as victor in the $10K Championship Event of No Limit Hold’Em.  This game alone earned him $1.5Million as well as the prized bracelet. In 2003 he achieved a second bracelet win in the $5K Limit Hold’Em event, to take home $251,680. These bracelet wins affirmed his stature as one of the truly great modern players, a reputation that follows him to some of the biggest final tables to this day.

With his Spanish origins, Mortensen has the nickname of ‘The Matador’. He’s the most successful player in the history of the WSOP, in monetary terms, and that’s no small achievement. He’s been a dominant force in the WSOP for over a decade, and he’s still one 37 years old. He doesn’t limit himself to playing in Las Vegas, and can often be seen at tables in other parts of the U.S.
