Raymer has a hobby of collecting fossils and this hobby has earned him the nickname ‘Fossilman’ with fellow poker players to whom he would often sell some of his fossils when his bankroll was running low in his early days of playing.
Raymer’s first cash at the World Series of Poker came in the $1500 Omaha Hi/Lo Split 8 or Better event in 2001. However Raymer won his one and only WSOP bracelet so far in the $10000 No Limit Hold’em World Championship Main Event in 2004. The following year in the same event, Raymer finished in 25th place from a field of over 5500 entrants.
He has cashed 13 times at the World Series of Poker and has won almost six and a half million dollars in prize money from the WSOP. This accounts for almost all his tournament winnings to date.
He is considered by many fans and fellow professionals to be one of the nicest players of the game of poker. He has a fantastic record in the game and still plays in the big tournaments today. He actually finished third in the $40000 No Limit Hold’em event at the World Series of Poker event in 2009 from a field of 201 players.
He stated in an interview in 2006 that he was thinking of running as a Libertarian Party candidate for the Vice Presidency of the United States, although he never actually did.
