WSOP Classic Moments – Sam Farha Doubles Up First Hand of the 2005 WSOP
In 2003, Sam Farha took on Chris Moneymaker heads-up at the World Series of Poker Main Event. Farha fell short that day and poker was forever changed. While the fan favorite to win it all, the cards did not fall his way and he will be remembered forever as the man that lost to Moneymaker.
Fast forward to 2005 and Sam Farha is making headlines again at the World Series of Poker. This time, he is making headlines not only on the first day, but on the very first hand of the event. Sam Farha is known as an action junkie and loves to play a lot of hands. It isn’t a surprise to anyone that Farha would play a hand such as A-10 offsuit.
Farha was dealt A-10 and raised to 200 pre-flop. Oliver Hudson then raised to 400 with pocket tens. Farha made the call, hoping to flop well. Farha then proceeded to flop the immortal nuts as the board fell A-A-10, giving both players a full house. In this spot, both players have to be doing a happy dance inside their head. Both are thinking “if I play this right, I could win a big pot here.” As a result, the action goes check-check.
The turn fell a queen and then the fireworks went off. Hudson bet out 300 and then Farha decided to pounce. Farha then raise to 1,300 total. I wonder if anyone noticed that Farha actually raised the size of the pot. The pot was 1,100 before the raise. That is Farha’s PLO background peeking through.
Hudson had to be going “Yes!” in his head when Farha bet. He then decided to push all-in. I don’t know whether he though Sammy might have an ace or whether he was trying to buy the pot right there. Unfortunately for him, Sammy had flopped the nuts and made the call showing A-10 for aces full. Hudson was drawing completely dead and Farha doubled up to 20,000 in chips to start off his Main Event.
Poker is sometimes so easy…
