Before the 1998 WSOP Main Event, Scotty Nguyen had a history of making huge scores in both gambling and poker and blowing that money.  In fact, Nguyen could not even afford to buy his way into a satellite for the Main Event.  Mike “The Mouth” Matusow put up 1/3rd of the buy-in for the satellite and the rest was history.

Nguyen made it to the first five-handed final table in WSOP history.  Nguyen knocked out two players at the same time to get to the final which included poker Hall of Famer and tournament mainstay T.J.  Cloutier.  Cloutier had won about every title imaginable, but a Main Event title eluded him.  And this event was no different as Cloutier would eventually finish in 3rd place.

Heads-up play was between Nguyen and Kevin McBride.  Then, a hand that has lived on in infamy occurred that gave Nguyen his trademark catch phrase.  Pre-flop, McBride raised to 50,000 and Nguyen flat-called and both saw a flop of 9h-9d-8d.  Nguyen checked, to McBride, who bet the pot.  Nguyen called and the turn fell the 8h.  McBride again bet, this time 100,000, and Nguyen called.  The river then fell the 8s.  A full house, eights full of nines, was on the board and a split pot appeared in order.

Nguyen then moved all-in.  McBride went into the tank for a while to ponder whether Nguyen actually had a nine.  In most cases, this was just a move and the pot was going to be chopped if he called.  Nguyen then made what became one of the most famous statements in poker when he uttered, “You call this one, it’s all over baby.”  McBride thought for a bit more and finally made the call, saying “I play the board.”  McBride held Qh-10h.  Nguyen, true to his word, turned over Jd-9c for nines-full and the tournament was over.

Scotty Nguyen won $1 Million for his Main Event win and became an instant legend.
