The 2008 WSOP Main Event was the first Main Event in WSOP history to have a delayed final table. Known as the “November Nine”, the final nine players returned in November to play out the final table in an event to expand media prescience of the event.

Attendance for the 2008 event grew to 6,844 after dropping to 6,358 the year prior. The top prize was $9.15 Million with the top 8 players finishing as Millionaires. Dennis Phillips entered the final table as the chip leader, but most of the poker world was watching Ivan Demidov. Demidov had made the WSOP Europe Main Event final table, finishing 3rd and was now the only person in WSOP history to make the final table in both Main Event’s.

After taking a big hit in chips early on, Dennis Phillips rebounded, and ultimately finished in 3rd place. 22 year old Peter Eastgate had managed to take the chip lead and face Ivan Demidov heads-up for the title. After a heated heads-up battle, it all came down to cards that seemed better suited for Razz than Holdem. Peter Eastgate limped in from the button with Ad-5s and Demidov checked his option with 4h-2h. The flop fell 2d-Ks-3h and Demidov checked to Eastgate, who bet out 1.25 Million. The turn fell the 4c, making Eastgate a straight and two pair for Demidov. Demidov checked to Eastgate, who bet 2 Million. Demidov then raised to 6 Million and Eastgate made the call. The river fell 7s and Demidov moved all-in and Eastgate snap-called and showed his wheel.

Peter Eastgate won over $9 Million and became the youngest player in WSOP history to win the Main Event. That record just lasted one year as Joe Cada won the 2009 Main Event at just 21 years of age.
