The 2000 WSOP Main Event was a year of first.  For the first time in history, over 500 players took to the felts in search of the world title.  Next, the 2000 Main Event would be the first time a player took more than $1 Million in prize money.  The first place finisher received $1.5 Million in prize money.

Two women made deep runs in this Main Event.  Kathy Liebert finished in 17th place and Annie Duke bubbled the final table, finishing 9th.  What was more impressive about Duke’s run was that she was 9 months pregnant.

The final table was stacked with great players.  Mickey Appleman, “Captain” Tom Franklin, Jeff Shulman, Chris “Jesus” Ferguson and T.J. Cloutier all made the final table.  Poker author and amateur player James McManus also made the final.

Ultimately, the final table of the 2000 Main Event played down to Chris Ferguson against T.J. Cloutier.  Cloutier was still in search of his first Main Event title.  He had a tough road to hoe as he started with a 10 to 1 chip disadvantage.  Cloutier battled all the way back to make things event again.  The chips were slightly in Ferguson’s favor when the final hand went down.

Ferguson raised pre-flop and Cloutier decided to move all-in.  Ferguson made the call and Cloutier had Ferguson dominated.  It was Ad-Qc against As9c.  The flop of Kc-4h-2h missed both players.  The turn Kh missed both players again and Cloutier was poised to double up and cripple Ferguson.  However, a Main Event title does not appear to be in the cards for Cloutier.  The river fell the 9h and Chris Ferguson was the 2000 WSOP Main Event champion.

Chris Ferguson has won five bracelets in total, but his only NL Holdem bracelet was the 2000 Main Event.  Ferguson is also the only player in WSOP Circuit history to win three Circuit Main Event titles.
