You can learn a lot by understanding what is happening at the river. If you are calling a lot of hands at the river you probably are playing to many cards. You need to start learning how to fold more hands away if you always are there.

There a couple facts that comes at the river. First you are going to be in one position or the other that is either in front or behind. You need to understand that the game is not over. First make sure that you are not donating money but you also don’t want to be bluffed out. Now is a time for caution.

If you know you are in front you want to make sure you make a bet that people are going to call. You just don’t want to make a lavish bet and have them fold. Learning how to read where your opponent is at is key here.

Also if you are unsure on what your opponent has you should always check at the river. If you are waiting for them to make a move they often times can be just slow playing. So if you make the bet on the river they are waiting to come over the top. Then you are stuck folding away a bet you just made because you improperly bet.

You do need to be wary of people bluffing when they do not get there draw card though. If people having been chasing they might try to buy their way out. This can be a great situation when you know that you have the nuts.

When in doubt on the river play conservative. You already have put money into get here and don’t want to be forced out by playing over aggressively. You also don’t want to be burned by getting too attached to the hand.
