Starting hands are a very important part of poker. Many new players play to many hands. We need to learn how to be selective and choose the right hands to play.

Starting hands will vary on the people you are playing against and the playing position.

The big for are A A, K K,Q Q,A K. These are the optimal hands that you can have to start with. You should play these hands at any position. It is important to be aggressive with these hands from the start. By being aggressive you will be able to protect your hand by knocking out weaker hands.

Slow playing is a concept were you play passively to increase the money going into the pot.

Medium pairs are J J, 10 10, 9 9, 8 8 these are hands were you don’t want to get caught with too much money in the pot. You are looking to get one of these cards on the flop giving you a set. When this happens you probably can win a large pot.  Remember to not chase when the flop comes out and there are better options on the table.

Big Cards are A Q, A J, K Q. All of these are measure the same as medium pairs. You are still very vulnerable. You need to make sure that you improve your hand on the flop or it is time to move away.

All pairs 7 7 and under are considered to be small cards and drawing pairs. This means that you are going to need to improve your hand to win the pot. Most often this is matching one of your cards on the flop. You have to understand that is very rare to win without improvement on this hand.
