Playing Early Position

Early position is the first players after the blinds. You are going to be the first players to play once the cards are dealt. This puts you in a disadvantage for many scenarios.

The reason for this is that you do not get to see what other players are going to do. The main problem is that if you have big cards you need to bet and often scare away the entire table. This will not allow you to at least steal people’s initial bets. When playing with medium cards you are stuck waiting to see if people are going to pay more than you are willing to go.

If you do decide to see the flop you should be in a place to be aggressive in this situation. Waiting for cards from early position can put you in a place to call plenty allowing late position to raise the stakes.

The one advantage of being in early position is that you can scare away a table of tight players. This doesn’t seem like a lot but if you are trying to win with a nothing hand stealing some blinds can help.

Make sure like always to understand the players that are behind you. This way you won’t feel pressured into make bets that you are uncomfortable with.

Just remember to be patient. If you have a good start up hand then take advantage of it. If you don’t have that great hand you always have that option to fold them away.
