Blinds in Texas Holdem

In past versions of poker most games had an ante. What an ante was an amount of money a player was required to put in before the hand started. The amount was small and was to start the pot for each dealing of the cards. In Texas Hold’em the ante has been replaced by two small bets to get the pot started. In Texas Hold’em this is called blinds and there is a small blind and big blind.

The small blind will be left of the button or dealer. The big blind is the amount that it will require players to stay in the game. The small blind will be half of that amount. So one player is not always a blind the button or deal is passed so everyone has their turn at every position.

Once the initial cards are dealt play will start with the player left of the big blind. Players here have three options to choose from. These options are fold in which you throw your cards in, call where you match the bet of the big blind or raise where you are required to bet twice the amount of the big blind. For a limit game you will be limited at twice the amount but with no limit you will be able to bet anything from twice the big blind to your entire chip stack.

Once the betting comes around to the blinds these players will have the option to stay in the pot. The small blind will be required to match the big blind or any raises. The big blind will be required to match any raises and if there is no raise they can check. Both of these players are also allowed to raise the pot. If the small blind or big blind decides to fold his hand he will lose his forced bet.
