Bankroll Clarifications

I always visit your site as well read all of your answers to some questions. I noticed that for a number of times, you advised and clearly suggested to play within limits and have the bankroll right for the game by which players are in. You have also advised for several times to keep an enough bankroll to smooth out variance. But unfortunately, I haven’t seen specific rough figures at all. Just like for an instance:

.50/$1 = $100 bankroll
$1/$2 = $200 bankroll
$3/$6 = $400 bankroll
$4/$8 = $600 etc.

Is there any advice you could give me about it? In particular about the limits and NL as well as PL holdem bankrolls?

By the way, in Phil Helmouth’s videos, it was mentioned that low limit (2/4) is unworkable because it’s the casino that will eventually get all the winnings. Is this true? I’m also concerned about which particular point is the rake too high to make money in the low limits.

Thanks for your time spent.

Kirk

Kirk,

In limit holdem, I recommend you have a bankroll equal to at least 300 big bets. In a 2-4 game, you want at least $1,200 to withstand the swings that you will experience. In a NL game, I would recommend the equivalent to 20 buy-in.

In a $100 buy-in that would be $2,000. Of course that is not to say you can’t have a bankroll that’s smaller, but it will not be as capable of surviving swings as a healthier bankroll.
