Online poker is booming, more people each day are joining online poker sites and enjoying everything they offer. Holdem is the most popular poker game played in both traditional casinos and in online poker rooms. Players are in total control of their poker environment when they choose to play online and this is just one of the many things which have caused these poker sites to become so extremely popular. Here are some things players will want to think about when they are trying to find the best place to play poker online that offers Holdem games:

There are a huge amount of sites to go to in order to play poker online and many of them will offer Holdem games. Players want to choose one of the sites that run off stable and trustworthy software so they can rest assured that they are playing in a secure environment with great graphics and smooth running games. The software will also dictate which features players will have available to them. Players will be able to find a lot of information about the different kinds of software that are out there by doing a bit of research online.

Online players also have the added benefit of being able to look for the best promotions out there. When they find a site that offers great Texas Holdem games and promotions, they will want to seriously think about making it the site where they play poker online. Some of the initial deposit bonuses many of the poker sites offer can help players to get as much as hundreds of extra dollars into their account. Poker sites will also have other exciting promotions which come in many forms and allow players to get in on exciting opportunities while they attempt to win some nice prizes.

Another thing that players need to take a look at is the amount of players a site has and how long it has been around. It’s always a good idea to choose one that has had time to prove itself. By making the right decision the first time, players will be able to get in on great Holdem games the moment they register, deposit their funds, and decide to log in and play poker online. This will let the player begin to take advantage of all of the benefits of online poker right away without needing to try out different sites.

The Holdem games are available on most of the site which allow players the ability to play poker online. This makes it very easy for them to find plenty of sites to choose from. Many poker sites have a free play section, this lets players enjoy Holdem games without needing to make a deposit first. Many players choose to try out these free play games first so they can get an idea of what the site really has to offer and see how much they like the quality and other features of the games. Players will feel better once they make an educated decision about their decision once they have taken the steps to find the best place to play poker online. Holdem is offered at the most popular poker rooms so locating the perfect place should be fairly simple.

Playing Without Sufficient Bankroll
In order to be able to »

It doesn’t matter how good a poker player is, at some point that player was a beginner and made mistakes the same as other poker players. There are many mistakes players make while they are learning to become better players. Let’s take a look at a few:

Playing Without Sufficient Bankroll

In order to be able to withstand the swings associated with any game of poker you play, you need to have a bankroll that is sufficient for the game. If you are a limit player, it is recommended that you have 300 to 500 big bets in your bankroll. For a $2-$4 game, you should look at having a bankroll of $1,200 to $2,000. If you are in a NL game, you should have about 25 to 50 times the buy-in amount for your game in your bankroll. For a $100 buy-in game, that is $2,500 to $5,000.

Assuming One Way to Play is the Only Way

There are many different ways to approach the game. Some people will assume that you need to play the game according to the way a particular book states. This is not true. Poker is ever evolving and players that fail to mix up their game and think outside of the box will never succeed.

Sticking to One Form of Poker

While Texas Holdem is the most popular form of poker, it is not the only form of poker out there. There are income opportunities in just about any form of poker if you know how to play the game. At a bare minimum you should learn how to play Omaha and Omaha Hi-Lo as well as Seven Card Stud. If you are an online player, you need to focus on all forms of poker. You will find that in some cases that the games in non-Holdem games are much juicier than the Holdem tables.
Letting Your Emotions Control Your Play

Many players will abandon their normal style of play after taking some bad beats. They get upset and decide to play as poorly as other players or they decide to play a style that isn’t consistent to winning. They then lose even more money and leave more frustrated. You need to realize that bad beats are a part of the game and teach yourself how to play optimum poker at all times. If you still are unable to control your emotions, you need to learn to quit the game after you get upset.

Playing Too Tight

While playing “tight is right,” playing too tight will make your style of play obvious to your opponents. You need to mix up your play dependent on your position at the table and the style that your table is playing. If your table is relatively rocky, loosen up your game. If the game is mega-loose, then is the time to rock up. Playing too tight will at best leave you winning just a small profit and at worst allow your opponents to take advantage of you when they catch when playing garbage.

Not Studying

If you take poker seriously, the one thing you should do is start studying. This includes reading books, watching videos, attending seminars and doing anything that you can to improve your game. Do your research to determine which books are best to help you at your game. Not all poker books are created equal and some books that were great 10 years ago are not as relevant now. Definitely read Super System and most anything by Sklansky. Also, if you are a tournament player, read Dan Harrington’s books.

Every poker player makes mistakes in the beginning. If they didn’t, the better players wouldn’t have anyone to take money off of. Think about your own poker game and if you recognize that you are making any of the above mistakes, take steps to correct the problem.

Of course a poker odds calculator can come in handy too…

So discipline in poker is built through the elements rather than discipline building the elements. The three crucial elements to assist you acquire great height in poker are;

1) The acquisition of concrete knowledge of poker
This knowledge will definitely be gained through reading most of the available literature to understand why, when and how; this will summarize the concepts, strategies and tactic that need to be employed in the game. This is in depth research for knowledge can also include reading poker forums, asking questions and having the courage to face better players in low risk games in helpful. The availability of seasoned players to you who can guide you is also form a source of first hand information.
With ample reading from all the available materials; most of the poker books have been in libraries and book stores for along time gathering dust hence are easy to access, will endow you with the best poker skills that make it very easy and simple for you to make the basic decisions that gradually rise your level of play. It builds up your discipline and confidence in dealing with all poker situations.
After gathering the literature and reading it, try to practice alone and in games what you have learnt. Objects as notebooks, chips and write cards can be used to record crucial points and improve your memory.

2) Practicing good and consistent judgement in every poker decision you make
Any knowledge that is utilized is useless! So you will need to practice on making correct and consistent judgement on decisions that face you in each individual poker game. This can be achieved by indulging in several plays where you later analyze you strong and weak points after the game. Here you try to think what might have happened if you took the other road against what you really did; this will eventually improve your judgement and build confidence in the next game.
Human is error and w learn through mistakes, hence wrong decisions or judgement made should never hold you back in the next poker game; in fact they should make you more aware of the expected outcome of each more you make

3) Refining your poker touch
You need to keep working on your feel and sense of cards; poker online is like learning you learn new things everyday hence you should not remain static once you reach the level above average lest others will jump past you in time. Sometimes you will lose, but is part of the game thus should never fear to fold despite fearing what other players move will be.
As the saying goes practice makes perfect indulge yourself in multiple games even with the pros without fear only checking out on the cost you incur if you lose.

There are situations in the game of poker where a player may want to consider slow playing their hand in order to raise the value of the central pot but executing this in the wrong situations could see your hand falling behind should your opponent not fall into the trap or hit a card they require.

Slow playing your hands can prove to be very profitable but there is a large amount of risk that comes with this form of play, creating a number of factors that you should consider before deciding that you want to use this play:

How does the table view your play to the present moment?

Poker is a game of analysis and with that fact, a large number of poker players possess the ability to analyse your play and your betting style. Should you have given the impression that you are reckless through the heavy betting of a number of hands, something will click in your opponents head when you suddenly alter your play, making them suspicious of your hand, reducing the chance of a call.

How does the community board look?

Community cards offer a hugh influence to how you should play your hand. A great example of this when placed into concept with slow playing a hand would be that slow playing a hand when a board is draw rich, offers players the chance to chase a flush, straight or better, is a very risky play as your opponent could hit their outs.

Always look at the cards that are on offer to your opponent and think about the possible combinations of hands that your opponent/s could be holding at that given time.

How many players are there still active within the hand?

Slow playing a hand that contains a high number of active players will dramatically reduce the chances of your hand going uncontested and increases the chance that your hand could get out ranked.

If you are holding the nuts then there would be no issue here but if your not, one of the players could be…

What playing style does your opponent display?

If you are fortunate enough to catch a hand that could afford to be slow played, you want to keep the most aggressive player at the table interested in the hand. Keeping this sort of player in the game will increase the pot amount and the amount that you are able to win.

If you find that the only player who is willing to face off with you during the hand is a player who has been showing a tight poker stance, you should abandon the idea of slow playing. The reason for this is that a tight player is less willing to make bets into the pot, meaning that you need to take charge of the betting.

How did your last hand do?

The best situation for slow playing would be when you are dealt a hand after a loss of chips to another player. Often when this happens, players are more willing to increase their bets in order to bully you out of the action. In this situation the check-shove (move all in) would result in a call from your opponent if they are pot committed.

Keep updated for more poker strategies in how to play poker online.

There are in totality 13 diamonds in a deck which involves a lot of strategy for ensuring a players hand by making four of them which have been seen.

Regardless of you level of skill in poker, there are players out there that are better than you. There are also players that think differently than you about every situation that you will face at a poker table. There are also those that have wisdom when it comes to poker and the poker lifestyle that has been gathered over a lifetime. Some of these people can help you to improve both your poker game and your life in general. I personally recommend that every poker player have a poker mentor.

Poker mentors do not always have to be a great poker player. Sometimes they may be an average player that has been around the block several times. They may also be someone that has been involved in the industry for many years and knows the ins and outs of the lifestyle.

Poker mentors can be helpful in many ways. First, they can serve as someone to bounce ideas off of in order to improve your game. Sometimes they can get you started in learning other poker games or strengthening your current poker game. Next, a poker mentor, especially one that has a few years on you, can serve as a life coach. Nothing is a better teacher than experience. Those that have the life experience and are willing to share it with you can save you some potential headache down the road.

I personally have a poker mentor. He is a poker author and former high stakes poker player. Age has effectively forced him to quit playing on the tournament circuit as his back does not allow him to sit for long stretches for a tournament. He occasionally will come out for an event, but it’s very infrequent now.

This man has taught me a lot about poker and life over the last few years. He has helped me improve my game and has helped me avoid some potential pitfalls in the gambling industry and in poker. I am a better player because of him and ultimately a better person.

Every player of substance has a mentor, even Phil Ivey and Doyle Brunson. At times Ivey and Brunson have talked about those players that they looked up to or that took them under their wing and gave advice. A mentor doesn’t always have to be someone older. Erik Seidel and Howard Lederer had each other and other players at the Mayfair Club in New York as mentors. They helped each other out and eventually made each other exceptionally strong in poker.

If you don’t have a poker mentor, I suggest you keep an eye out on someone you could develop a relationship with. Over time, that person could teach you more about poker and life than a book could ever teach you.

Well, because of your site, I was able to understand the basics of Texas Holdem just about a couple of months ago and eventually played real cash games. Thanks!

For my first deposit, I spent 25$ and from there to 600$ because of playing NL (2$, 10$ and now 25$). By the way, I invested on paradise poker.

My question now is about my daily swings. Yesterday, I started with 450 then move on to 650 and just to 550. And about my hands, well, I played merely about 400 hands per day two tables NL 25$. Do you think I am playing too wild or aggressive? Or perhaps having normal swings?

By the way, aside from poker, any plans of writing about other forms like omaha perhaps?

Thanks!

Benny

Benny,

You are likely experiencing normal swings that you will normally encounter.

As far as writing about other forms of poker, the opportunity may arise to write about other forms, but this site does focus primarily on Holdem.

On an average, I play 3-5 hours a session. My question is actually related to this. Do you think if I could stay longer than 5 hours, could I gain more, let’s say for example $600 or so? But I am also considering the risk of losing my sure winnings if in case.

Any idea on what am I supposed to do? When is the right time to quit a session, considering hope for winning more is still very prevalent in my thoughts?

Mr. Anonymous,

The saying goes, stay when the game is good, and get out when it is not. If after 5 hours, the game is good and you feel you can play at your best, then stay. You have a good chance to make more.

If the game is going bad or you are getting tired, or if you are worried about losing money, get out. It is better to come back when you are ready to fight than to stay around in less than peak conditioin.
