Any good poker player will let you know that poker players who do well must think about many different factors involved to win at poker. In bluffing alone, there are several psychological concepts that can spell the difference between bluffing and getting bluffed, two of these are known as poker tilts and tells. If you couple this knowledge with the right amount of skill and practice, you can be on your way to becoming a master at bluffing.

Examining Tilts

When a player commits mistakes because he/she got upset during a game, this is called tilt or being on a tilt. Suppose you are a huge favorite in a hand, when suddenly you lose to another player who hits a miracle card. This leads to an emotional downswing for the favored player which leads him to make bad decisions after that.

Tilt can also be triggered by poor tolerance of some players with opponents who are loud, rude, obnoxious, or just plain annoying. Players on tilt tend to bet on weak hands than what they normally would do. You may find this with some opponents and use it to your advantage when calling or raising them. On one hand, awareness of the symptoms of tilts will help you get out of it quickly and less financial losses on your end.

Tells from Poker Players

Poker tells are nuances from players which can assist you in figuring out a player’s intentions, mood and even the hand they might have at that point of the game. If you observe other players, you can find out for yourself how to act against them. Poker tells are especially pronounced with novice players who have yet to learn discipline in terms of playing poker.

One example is a player who suddenly seems to be sweating hard and nervous. If this player attempts to bluff, you can get him to fold quickly by re-raising him. If you find him looking at his low stack of chips and based on his betting patterns, his bluff will not hold water in this game especially those which have players on the table good enough to figure out a bluff.

Overly excited players will tend to keep darting their eyes back and forth the pot and the remaining players looking for signs that other players still haven’t hit a good hand at that point.

Both tilts and tells show lack of emotional discipline which can cause you to lose in poker. Otherwise, you’re good to go.
