The Semi-Bluff
On skill that a poker player will need to add to their arsenal at some point early in their career is a semi-bluff. The definition of a semi-bluff is a bet that is made by a player that does not hold a made hand, but has outs to make their hand. In poker, the semi-bluff is a powerful weapon that can be used to allow a player to draw at a hand and to pick up pots in various spots. Let’s take a deeper look at the semi-bluff.
What are some examples of a semi-bluff? A straight draw or a flush draw is the most common examples of a semi-bluff. If you are holding two hearts and two hearts hit the flop, you would be semi-bluffing if you bet at the pot. You do not hold a solid hand as of yet, but you can get there if you catch one of the remaining hearts in the deck. Another example of a semi-bluff bet would be if you held a hand such as A-K and under cards came to the board. If you were to bet out or to raise an initial bettor, you would be on a semi-bluff. In many cases, you would be behind in the hand, but chances are an ace or a king would be enough to win the hand.
What is the purpose of the semi-bluff? The main purpose of a semi-bluff is to try and get a free card on the turn. This works most effectively in position. If you are in position and bet or raise, odds are that your opponent will check the turn. If you did not hit your hand on the turn, then you can check behind and pick up a free card. This move is especially helpful in Limit Holdem as when you raise on the flop and get a free card on the turn, you are able to save a bet in the event you miss your hand. The other purpose of a semi-bluff is to try and pick up the pot right then and there. Let’s go back to the flush draw example. If the flop fell with low cards with two hearts, a semi-bluff may just force your opponent to fold. Flops miss more hands than they hit, and as a result, a semi-bluff may take a pot without further action.
The semi-bluff is a weapon that should be learned and developed early on in a poker player’s career. Be careful not to overuse it as players can pick up on your betting patterns and not give you respect for your bet or raise. When used effectively, this move will allow you to hit your share of draws and pick up uncontested pots.
