Playing the Nuts in Texas Holdem
Texas Hold’Em is about winning money. When playing against a competitive table, you are only going to win a limited number of pots. So, when you do win a pot, you really want to get the most out of it. When behind in the hand, you’re normally just going to be calling whatever someone else is betting until you hit your hand. There’s not much skill in that. Skill comes in when you have the nuts. How do you play it? Should you slow play, hoping someone else takes the lead each round or betting? Or, should you bet and hope people don’t get scared off by your bet?
The answer is both. The key is to determine what the other players are seeing. Look at the board and your play through their eyes to maximize the amount you can get out of the pot. Many inexperienced players never see outside their own eyes. This is a huge mistake. Other players are making decisions from their viewpoint, based on what they saw you do pre-flop, how you react to the flop or turn that created the nuts, and their perception of the chances you have to beat them.
If you played 8-9 pre-flop with no raise and the flop comes 5-6-7 rainbow and you bet it right away, you risk the chance of losing potential betters/callers for 3 rounds of betting. The chances of you winning a big pot are not very good. Allowing someone else to take the lead in this situation is going to be your best chance of maximizing your winnings for the hand. Obviously, this gives someone a chance to catch up to you, so be careful as the next cards come out, but the goal here is to maximize your wins.
If you started the hand with J-2 and the flop comes 2-10-K, you are probably not leading post flop. If you can get away with a check or a cheap call before the turn and another deuce hits, the chances of someone putting you on a deuce in your hand are small. In this case, you can bet it hard and hope someone is pretty confident with their king or ten and hope they have maybe even hit two pair. They are going to have a tough time adjusting their thinking that when they hit their king on the flop they were the leader and all of a sudden another deuce changes that. These types of hands are the ones you should make very good money and solidify your chip stack for the next hour or so.
The key to these situations and any other where you know you have the nuts is to view the hand through your opponent’s eyes. Once you learn how to do this, you will be able to take your game to a new level, winning more money and winning more often.
