Mistakes to Avoid in Low Stakes Limit Holdem

Many people think Texas Holdem is Texas Holdem. They think that if you learn how to play the game and figure out how to determine your odds of getting a card, they’ve got the game under control. This belief is one of ignorance and ends up costing many players a lot of money. Different variations of Texas Holdem require different skills and techniques. Low stakes poker is much different than tournament play. And tournament play is a world apart from high stakes action.

To become a top player, you have to master each variation of the game individually. Here are the two huge mistakes to avoid when playing in a low stakes fixed limit Texas Holdem game. Avoiding these mistakes will allow you to win more consistently, which is difficult in a low limit fixed game, but achievable if you are consistent in avoiding these mistakes.

First, don’t make a habit of slow playing. Slow playing in low stakes fixed limit games will turn winning hands into losing hands. Your goal should be to win as many pots as you can, whether you take just the blinds, a small $20 pot, or even grab a decent size pot once in a while. A win is a win and you have to have them to win money in the long run. Slow playing pocket aces or top pair on the flop will kill you in the long run. The correct thing to do is pre-flop raise strong hands and bet or raise when you flop what you believe is the best hand. Assuming you are playing at a full table, you must get people off of their weak hands before they have a chance to catch up. People playing low stakes games usually don’t want to spend money fishing for cards. Bet them off their hands and play against the remaining players that you have beat. Yes, once in a while someone will still catch up to you, but the statistics say if you consistently play strong when you are ahead, you will win more than you lose.

The second mistake to avoid is do not fall in love with your hand. Low stakes players are not big gamblers. They do not normally raise or especially re-raise without having the nuts. If you raise pre-flop with A/Q suited and hit your ace and bet it and then the turn comes and you bet again or raise and someone comes over the top of you, there’s a pretty good chance they hit two pair, three of a kind or a straight. Do not risk your chips just because you had the best hand pre-flop or after the flop. It means nothing. Let the hand go, lose a few chips and live to fight another day. You can not afford to throw chips away in low stakes games if you expect to win consistently.

Next, bluffing is a tool that seldom works in a low stakes game. You will find many players that will flop bottom pair and will stay in the hand until the river. Many of these players are the type that like to “keep you honest” and will call with inferior holdings, even if they think they are beat. If you have a hand such as A-J and miss on the flop, you can make a continuation bet to see where you are at, but if you are called, then odds are your opponent is drawing or you are behind. Continuing to bluff in this situation will many times lead to you adding chips to someone else’s pot.

By avoiding these mistakes, your game and your chances of winning will improve dramatically. Be consistent, be the rock at the table. Don’t allow the other players to trap you into mistakes. Low stakes poker is pretty basic and straight forward, all you have to do is play solid poker and avoid the costly mistakes covered here. Many times you will hear players make statements such as “you only play when you have a strong hand” or “I should have gotten out of the hand when you stayed in.” If you hear these types of statements, then you know you are playing a consistent strong strategy. Texas Holdem is about winning money, and at low stakes, straight forward play typically is the long term winner.
