WSOP Main Event Final Table Recap #2 – Ivey Eliminated in 7th
Players returned from the dinner break to the WSOP Main Event final table. The following were the chip counts directly after the dinner break:
Darvin Moon: 41,250,000
Phil Ivey: 14,900,000
Steve Begleiter: 38,100,000
Eric Buchman: 54,725,000
Joe Cada: 10,700,000
Antoine Saout: 28,725,000
Jeff Shulman: 7,175,000
Shortly after the dinner break, Jeff Shulman’s patience finally paid off as he was able to pull a doulbe up through Joe Cada. Cada raised to 1.25 Million and Shulman moved all in for 7.025 Million. After a long tank, Cada made the call and found himself behind with A-J against A-K. The board fell queen high and Shulman doubled up to 15 Million. Cada was crippled with 2.275 Million, or so it seemed.
The very next hand, Joe Cada moved all-in and was called by Eric Buchman. Amazingly, Cada was in the lead with J-4 against the 5-4 f Buchman. The board missed both players and Cada doubled up to 4.615 Million in chips. Cada was still in dire straights, but a double up through Phil Ivey would put him back in contention. Ivey raised to 1.25 Million pre-flop and Cada moved all-in for 5.85 Million. Ivey tanked for a while before finally calling with A-8. Ivey had two over cards to Cada’s pocket fours. The board failed to produce an ace or an eight, and Cada doubled up to 12.55 Million. Ivey was the new short stack with 10.375 Million.
Steven Begleiter made a fantastic call in a hand with Antoine Saout but did not like the end result. Begleiter raised to 1.5 Million pre-flop and Saout re-raised to 4.5 Million. Begleiter made the call and the flop fell 8h-3c-9h. Saout checked to Begleiter, who raised to 6.3 Million. Saout then moved all-in for 21.325 Million. Begleiter tanked for a long time before finally making the call with 8c-7c. Saout held Ah-Kh and was actually the favorite to win the hand at 51%. The turn would fall a heart to fill Saout’s flush and complete his double up to 52.775 Million. As a result, Saout is the new chip leader.
Phil Ivey was down to just 6.3 Million in chips and moved all-in under-the-gun. Action was folded around to Darvin Moon who made the call. Moon held A-Q and was dominated by Ivey with A-K. The crowd was chanting “Ivey, Ivey, Ivey” as the flop was dealt. The crowd fell silent when the flop fell Q-6-6 to give Moon a pair of queens. The turn fell a three and Ivey was left drawing to three outs. The river fell a meaningless five to seal the hand for Moon and eliminate Ivey in 7th place. Ivey will take home $1,404,014 but would have loved to have been able to pick up some hands to stay in contention. Darvin Moon moved up to 40 Million in chips after the hand.
Darvin Moon was a 3 to 1 dog to knock out Phil Ivey. A while later, he was involved in another hand where he was a 3 to 1 dog and it resulted in the dramatic elimination of Steven Begleiter. Steven Begleiter raised to 1.6 Million pre-flop and Moon shoved all-in for 39.925 Million. Begleiter insta-called and showed pocket queens. Moon showed Ac-Qh. Moon was far behind and needing a miracle ace to win the hand. The flop fell 7s-4d-8s and the turn fell the 3d, keeping Begleiter in the lead. Begleiter looked in shape to double up until the river fell the Ad to give Moon the win and send Begleiter home in 6th place. Steve Begleiter took home $1,587,160 for his deep run. After this hand, Moon regained the chip lead with 66 Million in chips.
Jeff Shulman raised pre-flop to 1.75 Million and Joe Cada moved all-in for 10.8 Million Shulman asked for a count and quickly made the call holding two jacks. Cada held pocket threes and was drawing to two out. The flop fell with a three on the door card to give Cada a set. Shulman needed a jack to stay alive. The turn fell a seven and the river a paint card, but it was a queen. Joe Cada doubled up to 32,375 Million and Shulman was crippled to 7 Million.
Darvin Moon to quote David Chicotsky “flipped his shit” yet again in a big hand against Joe Cada. Moon raised pre-flop to 2 Million and Cada re-raised to 5.6 Million. Moon then moves all-in and Cada beat him into the pot, calling with pocket aces. Moon flipped over a stunning Ks-9c. Moon’s misstep put Cada in position to double up. The flop fell 6-9-3 to give Moon a pair and out to suck out. The turn fell a four and the river another four to give Cada a double up to 56 Million. Moon slipped to 35.675 Million.
The very next hand, Jeff Shulman moved all-in pre-flop for around 5 Million and received a call from Antoine Saout. Shulman held Ad-5s and Saout Kd-Qc. The flop fell Jd-Ac-4c to give Shulman top pair and Saout a broadway draw. The turn fell the 5d to give Shulman two pair. The river fell the 4s and Shulman doubled up to around 11 Million in chips.
Heading into the late night, Jeff Shulman is the short stack with 11.375 Million and Antoine Saout is the chip leader with 53.425 Million. Joe Cada is right behind with 53.350 Million and Eric Buchman has 52.4 Million. Darvin Moon has slipped down to just over 30 Million.
Play will continue through the Vegas night and into the morning. We will be back later with a recap of the action as we march towards heads-up at the WSOP Main Event final table.
