Event #23, the $10,000 NL 2-7 Lowball World Championship, started with the smallest, but likely one of the toughest fields in all of the WSOP. 96 players turned out to take their shot at the $279,742 top prize.

Among those in the field were Mike Matusow, Dario Alioto, Tim Phan, Greg Raymer, Billy Baxter, Andy Black, Archie Karas, Huck Seed, Sam Grizzle, Gus Hansen, Freddy Deeb, Phil Ivey, Doyle Brusnon, and Jennifer Harman.

This type of event would normally only pay one table in most events, but with the flattened payouts at the WSOP, this event paid 14 spots. Among those that made the money were Jason Gray in 14th, Max Pescatori in 12th, and Roland de Wolf in 10th. The decision was made to make the final table of this event 8 handed. Therefore, here is how the final table shaped up:

Ville Wahlbeck (740,000)
Nick Schulman (295,000)
Vince Musso (799,000)
Michael Binger (59,000)
John Juanda (248,000)
Steve Sung (155,000)
David Benyamine (265,000)
Archie Karas (384,000)

Michael Binger had a cup of coffee at this final table and was eliminated in one hand. He was all-in and had to draw two with a 9-7-2. John Juanda stoop pat with 10-8-6-4-2. Binger drew a K-9 to finish with a pair of nines and as our 8th place finisher.

David Benyamine was next to do when he moved all-in pre-draw and drew 1 card. Steve Sung had made the call and stood pat with a jack. Benyamine held 9-6-5-4 but drew another nine to finish in 7th place.

Vince Musso was our 6th place finisher. Ville Wahlbeck raised to 35,000 pre-draw and Musso moved all-in. Wahlbeck called and stood pat. Musso elected to draw one. Wahlbeck revealed a number one (7-5-4-3-2) and Musso was drawing dead as he held 9-5-2-4 to draw to a nine.

Legendary gambler Archie Karas was eliminated in 5th place. He was all-in for 86,000 and Steve Sung made the call. Karas stood pat with a J-10-8-5-2 and Sung stood pat with 10-9-8-7-3. Karas finished 5th for $53,783.

John Juanda was our 4th place finisher. Juanda moved all-in after a raise to 50,000 pre-draw from Schulman. Schulman made the call and both drew one. Juanda drew a six to complete a 9-6-5-4-3 but Schulman one upped him and drew a seven to complete an 8-7-5-3-2.

Steve Sung finished this event in 3rd place. Sung was all-in pre-draw after a mini-raising war with Nick Schulman. Sung stood pat and after tanking for a bit, so did Schulman. Sung tabled 10-8-5-4-3 but Schulman was one better when he turned over 10-7-5-4-3. Sung took home $112,042 for his strong finish.

Schulman took a 2 to 1 chip lead over Ville Wahlbeck into heads-up play. Schulman held 1.916 Million to the 964,000 of Wahlbeck. On the final hand of the event, Schulman raised to 75,000 and Wahlbeck re-raised to 250,000. Schulman called and both players drew one. Wahlbeck then moved all-in and was snap-called by Schulman who turned over the ultimate nuts, a number one (7-5-4-3-2). Wahlbeck was bluffing with a pair of nines and Nick Schulman was the champion. Ville Wahlbeck finished as runner-up in this event and took home $172,864.

With an exclamation point of a final hand, Nick Schulman won his first WSOP bracelet. In addition to the bracelet, he won $279,742. This moves him over $3.8 Million in career earnings. Congratulations to Nick Schulman, NL 2-7 Lowball World Champion.
