WSOP Event #2 Recap: $40,000 NL Holdem Day 3
Day 2 of the $40,000 NL Holdem Event saw 23 players return to try and make their way to the final table. Justin Bonomo started the day as chip leader and 2005 WSOP Main Event Champion Greg Raymer was in 3rd place.
Andrew Robl was the short stack heading into this event and he wasted no time trying to double up. He shoved from the small blind with 6-3. Greg Raymer called him from the big blind with A-4 and was well in the lead. He then proceeded to catch an ace on the turn to seal Robl’s fate and knock him out in 23rd place.
Frank Kasella, David Chiu, and Neil Channing soon followed Robl out the door. Andy Black, sporting a new beard for this WSOP, was the next player eliminated. He was all-in for around 245,000 against Dani Stern. Black held A-J and Stern A-K. Black would flop two pair with an A-J-6 flop, but the turn would spike Stern a king and Black headed out in 19th place.
The next pay level started at 18 and Matt Glantz was the first to go out at the new level. His Q-9 was no match for the A-Q of Lex Veldhuis. Clark Hamagami was next out the door when his A-10 ran into the A-J of Dani Stern. Doshi Suresh was the 16th place finisher when he took A-10 against the pocket queens of Greg Raymer.
David Baker was the first player to take home a six figure payday from this event. His pocket sixes were not able to outdraw the pocket jacks of Lex Veldhuis, and as a result Baker went home with $128,666. Brian Rast had his kings cracked by the pocket fives of Vitaly Lunkin. Lunkin would flop a set of fives and river quads to send Rast home in 14th.
Brian Townsend made a move from the button by moving all-in for 800,000 with 6-7 offsuit. Unfortunately for him, Alec Torelli and Noah Schwartz both woke up with big hands from the blinds. Torelli shoved all-in with pocket tens and Schwartz then called that shove with his queens. Torelli would flop a set of tens and then turn quads to knock out Townsend and knock Schwartz down to 700,000. At this point, Torelli was the new chip leader with 5 Million in chips.
Matthew Marafioti was next to head out when he moved all-in with pocket queens and ran into the pocket kings of Isaac Haxton. The board missed both players and Marafioti was toast. Keith Lehr would soon follow as he raced with A-Q against the pocket jacks of Greg Raymer. Raymer would win the race and Lehr went home $172,000 richer.
After Lehr’s elimination, the two tables were combined for the last table:
Seat 1 — Ted Forrest
Seat 2 — Noah Schwartz
Seat 3 — Alec Torelli
Seat 4 — Isaac Haxton
Seat 5 — Greg Raymer
Seat 6 — Justin Bonomo
Seat 7 — Lex Veldhuis
Seat 8 — Dani Stern
Seat 9 — Tony G
Seat 10 — Vitaly Lunkin
The official final table is 9 handed, so one more player had to go. Greg Raymer tried to steal a pot off Vitaly Lunkin. Lunkin had raised and Raymer shoved. Lunkin surprised Raymer with a call and showed pocket jacks. Raymer held just pocket sixes. Raymer never really stood a chance to knock out Lunkin as the board gave Lunkin a straight draw and the turn gave him broadway. Lunkin doubled up to over 3.2 Million in chips.
Isaac Haxton would then take the chip lead from Alec Torelli. On a flop of Q-8-6, Haxton bet 400,000 into Torelli, who then shoved all-in. Haxton snap called and showed pocket sixes for a set. Torelli showed Q-J for top pair. The turn would give Torelli a straight draw, but a river 3 would give the hand to Haxton. Haxton would move up to 5.5 Million in chips and Torelli would drop to 2.7 Million.
Tony G had been playing a relative short stack all day, doubling up a few times. He was finally all-in for the last of his chips against Alec Torelli and Vitaly Lunkin. Torelli and Lunkin checked it down and by the river, Tony G held a pair of seven, but they were not good enough. Lunkin had flopped a pair of tens and Tony G was our final table bubble boy. However, for his “bubble” finish, he took home $172,120.
