2010 WSOP Event #50 Recap – Chance Kornuth Wins $5,000 PL Omaha Event
Event #50 of the 2010 World Series of Poker was the $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha event which saw 460 entrants all playing for a chance to win the top prize payout of $508,090 and a coveted gold bracelet. When play finished on day one there were 207 players left heading into day two. By the start of day three however, that number had dropped to 31 and the final table of nine was revealed after almost six and a half hours of play and looked as follows:
Scott Mandel 1,211,000
Danny Smith 1,069,000
Chance Kornuth 896,000
Kevin Boudreau 854,000
Edward Martin 791,000
Eric Liu 771,000
Robert Mizrachi 711,000
Jose Nacho Barbero 328,000
Julian Gardner 266,000
The first elimination saw pre-flop betting which led to Jose ‘Nacho’ Barbero going all-in and this was called immediately by Danny Smith. Barbero had Ad-Kc-Jh-8d while Smith had Ah-As-Qc-8c. The flop Ac-8h-6h gave Smith a set of Aces and when 4c on the turn was followed by 6c on the river, Smith had a full house and Barbero had a 9th place finish for which he earned $40,364.
After a flop of 3d-7d-Js, betting commenced between Robert Mizrachi and Scott Mandel with both of them going all-in. Mandel had Jc-7s-4s-4c giving him two pair while Mizrachi had Ac-Ad-Jd-10d which gave him a top pair and a draw for a flush. The Kc on the turn gave Mizrachi some more outs but the 5h on the river was not one of them and he left the game with $52,471 for his 8th place finish.
Eric Liu was the next player eliminated. After a 60,000 bet from Chance Kornuth, he raised to 225,000 which Kornuth duly called. The flop Ah-10s-7h saw Kornuth going all in and this was swiftly followed by a call from Liu. Kornuth was holding Qh-Jc-10d-2h while Liu had Ac-As-Qd-2s. This meant Liu was in front with top pair while Kornuth had some draws for a flush and a straight. When Ks appeared on the turn, Kornuth had his straight but Liu only needed another spade for a nut flush. However he could not be saved when 9d appeared on the river. Liu’s 7th place finish saw him walk away with $68,902 in prize money.
After a raise from Chance Kornuth pre-flop, Julian Gardner called and the flop was revealed 9h-Jc-6c. This was checked by Gardner but a bet for 85,000 from Kornuth saw Gardner going all in. Kornuth called with Kd-9c-Jd-7c in his hand. Gardner’s cards were revealed as 7h-4s-6s-8s. When the turn saw Kc Kornuth had a flush and Gardner looked to be on the way out. 10d on the river confirmed this and he left the competition as the 6th place finisher with prize money of $91,387.
5th place went to Scott Mandel who was up against Chance Kornuth before the flop which came Kh-Js-3c. This was checked by Mandel and then Kornuth and the turn showed 8d after which Mandel found all his chips in the pot. Mandel’s hand was 3s-3d-9d-5s giving him a set of threes while Kornuth had 8s-8c-6c-4s for a set of eights. When 7c was rivered, Mandel was sent to the rail with a paycheck for $122,455.
A pre-flop raise of 280,000 from Chance Kornuth saw Ted Martin going all in and this was called by Kornuth and Kevin Boudreau. The flop 6s-10s-2c saw Boudreau following Martin all in and Kornuth made the call. The hands looked as follows:
Boudreau – 7c-2s-Ah-8s (giving him a flush draw)
Martin – 6c-Js-Ad-Kc (giving him a pair of sixes)
Kornuth – 7c-2s-Ah-8s (giving him a pair of deuces and a straight draw)
The 9s on the turn gave Boudreau his flush and Ted Martin was out of the game as the 4c on the river could not help him. However, he took $165,825 with him for finishing in 4th spot.
Danny Smith placed a pot bet from the button and was then put all in by Kevin Boudreau from the big blind. Smith had Jd-Qs-8h-Ac while Boudreau had 7s-3s-Ah-Ks. The board ran out 9d-3d-6h-Qh-Kh and gave Boudreau the hand with two pair. So 3rd place went to Danny Smith and netted him prize money of $226,923.
So heads up play began between Kevin Boudreau and Chance Kornuth and within half an hour we had our winner. Both players were betting big before the flop 2h-8c-Jd and were all in after it came down. Kornuth had 6h-Qc-8h-9d and Boudreau had Kc-Kh-4s-As which put him ahead with his pair of Kings. But when 8s came on the turn, the lead flipped to Kornuth who now had a set of eights. The 3c on the river was inconsequential and Boudreau was eliminated in 2nd place but took home a paycheck for $313,792.
In his second ever WSOP cash, Chance Kornuth beat 459 other players to claim the top prize of $508,090 and take home a gold bracelet and title of champion. Congratulations Chance Kornuth – winner of event #50!
