2010 WSOP Event #43 Recap – Ian Gordon Wins $10,000 HORSE World Championship
The 43rd Event of the 2010 World Series of Poker was the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship. An impressive 241 players registered for this event with prize money for the top 24 players and a huge $611,666 for the eventual winner, not to mention a coveted WSOP gold bracelet. The number of players who made it to the second day was 169 but by the end of day two this number had been reduced back to 23 players. Day three saw that number reduced further until the final eight were revealed:
Matt Glantz 1,803,000
Marco Johnson 1,292,000
Eugene Katchalov 1,030,000
Ian Gordon 955.000
Nick Schulman 800,000
Carlos Mortensen 737,000
Richard Ashby 546,000
Marco Traniello 85,000
In a hand of Omaha-8, Marco Traniello moved all in from the small blind after a raise from Marco Johnson. This was called by Ian Gordon and Johnson. After the flop 7s-3d-3h, Gordon bet and was called by Johnson. The turn of Kc led Gordon to bet again with Johnson calling and after yet another bet from Gordon after the river Kd, Johnson folded leaving it to Traniello and Gordon. Gordon had 3c-6d-5h-4d for a full house while Traniello’s hand Qs-Qs-Ah-6h was not good enough and saw him eliminated first from the final table in 8th place with a $61,414 payday.
A hand of Hold’em saw a shove from Nick Schulman which was called by Marco Johnson. Schulman had Ac-Js while Johnson was ahead with As-Kh. The flop gave them both another ace when Ah-3c-9c appeared but Johnson was still ahead. The 4s on the turn and Kd on the river gave Johnson two pair and Schulman was out with a 7th place finish and prize money of $78,654.
In a hand of Razz Eugene Katchalov was the bring in and Carlos Mortensen completed. By fifth street Mortensen was all in and Katchalov made the call. The boards were as follows:
Mortensen – A-3/7-5-7-8/Q
Katchalov – 2-6/Q-8-4-5/6
Katchalov had a better 8 low after sixth street and Mortensen couldn’t improve on the river so was off to the rail in 6th place taking $102,237 with him.
A hand of Hold’em saw Matt Glantz leave the game in 5th place. After going all in pre-flop, he was called by Richard Ashby. Ashby had Qs-Qh while Glantz had Ac-Kd. The board ran out as follows 7d-10s-8h-3h-3d, giving Glantz nothing two pair with an Ace-high and Ashby two pair so Ashby took the pot and Glantz took the rail along with prize money of $135,040.
Marco Johnson took 4th spot in a hand of Stud 8 in which he found himself all-in on third street. He was up against Ian Gordon and their hands looked as follows:
Gordon – As-4c-6d-Jh-8d-Ad-5h
Johnson – Ah-6c-7h-Kh-2c-Qd-Js
Gordon took the pot with a pair of aces and a low as well and Johnson was out with $181,503 in his pocket.
A betting war between Eugene Katchalov and Ian Gordon before the flop saw Katchalov all in once the flop had been dealt. The flop 10d-8d-3d was better for Gordon as he was already holding two diamonds (Kd-Jd) and now had a flush. Katchalov on the other hand had a pair of sevens (7c-7h) and upped that to two pair after the turn 3s. However the chance for a full house and a winning hand never came when the river appeared Qd. Katchalov was out in third with $248,831 and it was left to Gordon and Richard Ashby to fight for the bracelet and title of champion.
And the fight was over as soon as the next hand was played. The pot was high pre-flop but both had chips left in their stacks when the flop came down 6h-10h-8d. Gordon checked but Ashby bet and was then raised by Gordon. Ashby decided to call. The 10c on the turn saw Gordon betting again and even though Ashby had a feeling that Gordon had the hand he pushed all his chips into the pot. He was right as Gordon had 9h-9s giving him two pair and Ashby’s Ad-Jd was not faring well. He needed to match one of his cards to be in with a shot but the river Kd was not the card he was looking for and he had to make do with the runner-up spot. However the paycheck of $378,027 was probably some consolation.
So the winner of Event #43 was the previously little known Ian Gordon who took his first WSOP gold bracelet along with a massive paycheck of $611,666. Congratulations Ian!
