Event #3 of the 2010 WSOP kicked off with Day 1a of the $1,000 NL Holdem Event. This is the smallest buy-in open event in the WSOP and this year, several of these events will be held over the course of the WSOP. 2,601 players turned out for the first day of this event. Last year, the $1,000 “Stimulus Special” drew over 6,000 players. If Sunday is capped at 3,000 as expected, this number will fall short.

Several named players were in attendance today, Matt “AllInAt420” Stout, Vanessa Rousso, Blair Hinkle, “Amarillo Slim” Preston, Chris Moneymaker, Dan Shak, Mike Sica, Havad Khan, Tom McEvoy, Humberto Brenes, Brock Parker, Andy Black, and James Guill were all in attendance.

Gavin Smith was also in the event but was out shortly after the start of Level 2 after flopping top pair with 10-8. He ran into A-10 from another player. Brian Cantu also put up his $1,000 but was dispatched after running pocket jacks into pocket queens. James Guill never got much going all day. According to his twitter, he was severely card dead. His final hand saw him try to make a move with A-J to pick up some chip, but an opponent called with pocket sevens. Guill picked up outs on both the flop and turn. With 13 outs to hit his hand, the river fell a deuce (not an out) to send him to the rail.

Guill was just one of many that fell. Defending Main Event Champion Joe Cada ran K-Q into A-9. Kara Scott ran A-3 into A-K. Eric Mizrachi ran A-K into Aces. Bernard Lee was all-in and ahead with pocket nines vs. K-J, but a jack on the river ended Lee’s day.

Other players finished quite well on their Day 1. Vanessa Rousso twittered that she is at 25,700 to finish the day, which is about average. We are not sure where he finished the day, but Amarillo Slim was over 30,000 in chips at one point. Harrah’s has not released the chip counts at present. We will update you with the top ten once that has been released.

Day 1b of this event kicks off Sunday at 2 PM and another group will try and make their way to Day 2. Stay tuned to theWSOPblog.com as we bring you recaps from every event of the 2010 WSOP.
