2010 WSOP Event #28 Recap – Miguel Proulx Wins $2,500 PL Omaha Event
The 28th event at the 2010 World Series of Poker was the $2500 Pot Limit Omaha. 596 players registered for this event and with a first place prize of $315,311 along with a coveted gold bracelet up for grabs, it was no wonder. After one day of play only 102 players were left fighting it out and by day three the final table was revealed.
With all to play for the final nine and their chip counts were as follows:
Patrick Hanoteau 870,000
Miguel Proulx 869,000
L. J. Klein 855,000
Joerg Engels 761,000
Karl Gal 425,000
Trevor Pope 366,000
Michael Greco 137,000
Tommy Le 126,000
Stephane Tayar 78,000
Having been one of the day’s chip leaders it was a surprise to see that the first casualty was Patrick Hantoteau. Luck was not on his side however as he faced losing hand after losing hand and somehow ended up in last place. His final hand saw him raising to 70,000 which was re-raised by Karl Gal. Hanoteau called the bet with almost all of his remaining chips. Hanoteau held Ad-Kd-Jh-7s and Gal’s hand consisted of As-Ah-9s-3s. The flop showed 10d-3c-7d which gave Hanoteau the potential for a flush and when the turn showed 1Qc, Hanoteau also had hopes for a straight. However the cards were unkind and the river showed 4s which left Hanoteau out in 9th position, picking up prize money of $25,044.
Finishing in 8th place was Tommy Le who decided to call a raise from Miguel Proulx. Le had 10h-7d-4c-3h in his hand while Proulx had Ah-Ks-5s-5h. The flop showed 3d-5d-Qh which at this point gave Le a pair of threes and he decided to go all in, but unbeknown to him, Prouxl was holding a pair of fives in his hand and with the 5 from the flop, Proulx was in the lead with his set of fives. The turn and the river showed 7s and 8d which did not improve either hand so Proulx’s set gave him the hand and showed Le the door with $32,254 in his pocket.
Next to go was Trevor Pope who raised to 100,000 from the off. Miguel Proulx the new chip leader decided to re-raise and then Pope called with almost all of his remaining chips. Pope’s hand was Jc-10s-9c-8s, while Proulx held Kc-Kd-Jh-7c. But when the cards fell and showed 6d-3h-Ad-3c-4s, it was Proulx who had the better hand with his two pair. Pope finished in 7th position and took home prize money of $41,850.
The next player out was Karl Gal who was down to his last 200,000 chips. After a raise pre-flop, Gal decided to go all-in and again Proulx was the one to call. Gal’s hand Ks-Kd-7d-8c along with the flop 2d-Qd-Jd saw him holding a flush and put him ahead of Proulx who was holding 10h-Qh-6d-Jc, giving him two pair. The turn As was still not enough to put Proulx in front of Gal who’s flush looked enough to give him the pot. But luck was on Proulx’s side when the river saw another queen (Qc) appear, and Proulx was the winner with a full house. Gal’s 6th place finish saw him take home $54,736 in prize money.
5th place went to Joerg Engels who with a hand of As-9d-9s-4d decided to raise to 110,000 from the off and was called by Michael Greco who was holding Ad-6h-3d-3h. The flop saw 6s-5d-6d which instantly put Greco ahead with his set of sixes. And when the turn showed Ah, Greco already had a full house before the river had been revealed. This left Engels needing a nine to have a full house of his own but unfortunately for him it never came as the river showed 7s and Engels left the game with prize money of $72,227.
The next hand saw Stephane Tayar going all in pre-flop while holding a hand of 8s-9s-Jc-Qc. He was called by Proulx who had As-Ks-3d-4c in his hand. After the flop 10s-Qs-2c, Tayar held a pair of ladies and a Js would have given him a straight flush. However the Js would also have handed Proulx the royal flush and any spade would have therefore also handed Prouxl the highest flush so Tayar could only hope that a spade would not appear. But again Proulx’s luck was in as the turn saw 2s and the 7c appeared on the river. Tayar was out in 4th and picked up $96,243.
Michael Greco decided to re-raise a bet from L.J. Klein with his remaining 485,000 chips and Klein went for the call. Greco’s hand was Ac-10c-10d-5d and Klein was holding Kd-Jh-7d-6h and when the flop showed 8h-Jc-6c, Klein’s two pairs saw him out in front. The turn and the river did not help Greco at all as 4h and 5s were turned and Klein won the pot with Greco out in third place netting $129,691.
So it was down to the final two to battle it out for a gold bracelet and $315,311 in prize money. So for forty five minutes L.J. Klein and Miguel Proulx played before the final hand was won.
When Klein raised to 125,000 pre-flop, Proulx decided to make the call. The flop showed 10s-4s-Js and Proulx checked but Klein bet 75,000. Proulx had a good think before making the call. The turn was 9d and it was Proulx’s turn this time to bet 200,000. The tables had truly turned when this time Klein thought long and hard before calling. The river showed Kh and Proulx checked but Klein went all in. This time there was no hesitation when Proulx made the call for he was holding As-Qd-Qh-2s giving him the nut flush which couldn’t be beaten. Klein was out in second place with prize money of $195,147. So having played superbly and eliminating more players from the final table than anyone else, Miguel Proulx was the winner of the $2500 Pot Limit Omaha.
Congratulations Miguel!
