2010 WSOP Event #2 – $50,000 Poker Players Championship – Day 1 Recap
Event #2 of the 2010 WSOP is the $50,000 Poker Player’s Championship. The best of the best in the poker world will take their shot at this 8-game mix to try and lay their claim to the “True Poker World Championship.”

Doyle Speaks About Chip Reese
The event kicked off on Friday with a special tribute to the first winner of the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. Event, Chip Reese. Reese won the event after a marathon battle with Andy Bloch in 2006. Reese passed away suddenly in December 2007 after complications from pneumonia. Doyle Brunson spoke of his friend and said that he was the greatest player he ever knew and that Reese was true class act. An emotional tribute video was then played for those in attendance before Brunson gave the customary “Shuffle Up and Deal” call.
Play was fairly standard through the first couple levels of play. Dan Shak was the very first player to be eliminated. He ran a set into a flopped straight with a straight flush redraw before the first break was even reached. After his elimination, both Chris “Jesus” Ferguson and Howard Lederer both joined the event just in time before the close of registration. Just after the dinner break, the final tallies were in. 116 players total entered the event and first place for this event will pay $1,559,046.
Most of the big names were in this one. Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, David Benyamine, Daniel Negreanu, Tom Dwan, Jennifer Harman, Eli Elezra, Chau Gian, David Chiu, Erick Lindgren, Gus Hansen, Tony G, John Juanda, and Scotty Nguyen are just a few. Jennifer Harman was the only woman to play in this event.
Each player started with 150,000 in chips, but there were still several eliminations during the day besides Dan Shak. Tom Dwan was eliminated shortly after dinner. Greg Mueller was eliminated during 2-7 Draw when Justin Bonomo made a 9-7. Brian Townsend was eliminated during PLO when he could only muster a pair against the pair of tens of Alex Kostritsyn. Andrew Brown and Marc Karam were the others eliminated in Day 1 action.
Erik Sagstrom finished the day as chip leader with 329,100 with David Oppenheim right behind him with 313,800. Doyle Brunson finished the day in 3rd place with 269,200 in chips.
