WSOP Main Event Final Table Predictions Revisited
The final table of the Main Event of the World Series of Poker has come and gone and I figured it was time to revisit my picks for the final table. As we all know, Joe Cada won it all after some amazing suckouts to take the chip lead three-handed. Of course that goes well outside of my prediction of him finishing in the bottom three. Let’s take a look at the rest of my picks.
James Akenhead – My pick 9th – Actual placing 9th: I was spot on for this one. He never got anything going and finally ran threes into nines. I felt that his luck was about to run out, and I wasn’t too far off.
Antoine Saout – My pick 7th – Actual placing 3rd: Saout probably played the most aggressive of anyone at the final table. He actually should have been playing for the bracelet if not for bad luck in the form of Joe Cada.
Steven Begleiter – My pick 6th – Actual placing 6th: Again, I was spot on here. I just didn’t feel he had the aggressiveness to win, but I did not know he was being coached by Jonathan Little either. In the end, he ended up being the victim of the “Suckout Express” known as Darvin Moon.
Kevin Schaffel – My pick 5th – Actual placing 8th: I felt Schaffel played great. He took the ultimate cooler when he got all-in with aces against kings. Unfortunately, you cant win when a player flops a set and turns quads. I did say that his style could move him up the board or bust him early.
Darvin Moon – My pick 4th – Actual placing 2nd: Darvin tried time and again to implode but he ran very well. He knocked out both Ivey and Schaffel via suckout and was very fortunate to finish where he did. Sadly, he even had a chance to win it all, but he went hyper-aggressive and it cost him.
Jeff Shulman – My pick 3rd – My wish Hit by Bus- Actual Placing 5th: Shulman ended up being the player everyone expected Darvin Moon to be, and that is to rock up and move up the pay. Whether by design or by result, that is what happened. Shulman slid all day and eventually had to take a ride on the “Suckout Express.” Either way, Shulman lost, and I was happy.
Eric Buchman – My pick 2nd – Actual placing 4th: Buchman played the best overall game at the final table but made a big mistake late that cost him most of his chips when he ran A-Q against A-K. A later suckout by Moon would finish him off in 4th.
Phil Ivey – My pick 1st – Actual placing 7th: I must say that in a way, I don’t feel that Ivey played nearly as aggressive as he maybe should have. Reports from others close to Ivey say that he was running card dead. Sadly, when Ivey picked up a prime double-up hand, he ended up getting sucked out by Darvin Moon.
All in all, while this final table made for a lot of excitement, I think it ended up being bad for poker. Yes, there was a lot of hype and buildup, but in the end, the product ended up looking more like an online hyper-turbo suckout fest than a Main Event final table.
The ratings have not been announced yet, but they will likely be up. As a result, expect much of the same insanity next year for the final table. The schedule for the 2010 WSOP should be out sometime by the end of the year, or so Harrah’s claims. It will be fun to see what the next schedule is. Once that comes out, naturally we will discuss it here.
