Will Rebuy Events Become a Thing of the Past
An article was posted recently on pokernewsdaily.com stating that the World Series of Poker officials were debating the merits of rebuy tournaments. There is a possibility that this type of even may be eliminated from the schedule. One of the primary arguments seems to be that a rebuy bracelet winner in many instances is the player with the biggest bankroll to survive the rebuy period.
While I understand the thinking behind this, I don’t think that it is wise to eliminate rebuy events at the World Series of Poker. While many players will dump insane amounts of money in rebuy events, that is part of what makes a rebuy event attractive to people. Daniel Negreanu will go insane during a rebuy event with the hopes of being able to outplay his opponents once the rebuy period is over. This way he can get the chips that were donked around.
The fact that someone dumps a ton of money into a rebuy event does not necessarily increase their chances of winning the event. The argument that someone can essentially “buy a bracelet” may sound good in theory but it often does not work out that way in practical application. One must still navigate their way through a field of players to win the event.
I hope that the events do not get eliminated for another reason as well. If they start eliminating rebuy events, what to stop them from pushing other games out the door. Events such as the triple draw event are a long standing part of WSOP history and really should be allowed to stick around. While Holdem is the main game of choice, mixed games are really beginning to pick up in popularity and should be allowed a chance to grow. If you eliminate rebuy events, what’s there to stop them from systematically eliminating other “unpopular” games.
Granted, some events will never be eliminated. There isn’t a person that can claim that the Omaha events should be dropped because they are steadily increasing in numbers each year. I just do not want to see Holdem take an even bigger chunk of the WSOP pie than it already does.
I’m interested in finding out who brought up the idea of eliminating rebuy events. Chances are it was someone that just didn’t like rebuy events. Hopefully that is the case and not a case of some Harrah’s suit wanting to monkey with the Series.
Time will tell what the fate of the events will be. Hopefully they will make the right decision and not mess with history too much. However, this is Harrah’s, and they are known to make strange decisions.
