The WSOP is Just 27 Days Away
It’s just 27 days until the start of the World Series of Poker. Anticipation is rising as many are looking forward to try and win a coveted WSOP gold bracelet. I am among those looking forward to the WSOP. While I haven’t made my final decision on what I am playing, I will likely play at least the $1,500 Limit Holdem event.
Another event that I am giving strong consideration to is the $1,000 Stimulus package. That field will be massive and actually gives the best odds for cashing, not just because of the strength of the field but also due to its massive size. Of course, in most tournaments, a min-cash is no big deal. However, a WSOP cash is somewhat of a big deal. Although, in the end, I don’t know whether it is wise playing an event that I do not feel I have a decent chance to win just for the sake of a WSOP cash.
My poker mentor brought up a fantastic point also regarding the WSOP. He stated that he will not attend unless there is a vaccine for the Swine Flu. I had not given that any consideration lately. His point was great due to the fact that he is in his 70’s and something like that will almost be 100% fatal to him. Personally, I don’t know if I want to take that chance. Like I told him, if there isn’t a vaccine, I may just skip the WSOP and play another year. My health is much more important than poker. With that being said, there is almost a month left before the start of the WSOP, so hopefully things will calm down before then.
Assuming that I am at the WSOP, another event I am giving consideration to playing is the $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. This should be an incredibly soft field and I should have a great chance to do well in this event. I will likely try to play a couple of satellites to get into this event.
Satellites are one area I hope to improve my overall performance in this year. In 2007, the last time I played the WSOP, my performance in satellites was awful. Some of it was bad luck, but overall the best I could do is chopping an Omaha 8 or Better satellite. I have been playing much more NL in recent months and all have been turbo or ultra turbo tables, which best simulate a WSOP satellite.
Over the next month, I will be getting in some practice for the WSOP, both in single table mode and with the FTOPS over on Full Tilt. I plan on playing several events as a warm up. I’m hoping to do well as to get some extra cash to go into the WSOP.
The 2009 WSOP is upon us. It will be interesting to see what stories unfold from the event. Barring something unusual, I hope to be in strong contention for a couple of events. Hope to see you there!
