Playing the Stimulus Event and Maybe I’ve Lost the Thrill

Yesterday was the big $1,000 NL event at the WSOP, also known as the Stimulus Special. As I have been talking for a couple of months, I did indeed play. I started over at Brazilia with a pretty ragtag bunch of players and David Levi. I was fortunate enough to double up in the first 10 minutes of the event when my top two pair with flush draw outdrew a set of nines.

I then moved my way up through the day to around 12k in chips. Most of them came off of a big hand I took from a kid that was playing very hyper aggressive. I flopped a set of sevens and he tried to bet me off. Thank you for the chips buddy!

I hung tough until around Level 7 when I started to slide a bit. Mostly, it was due to lack of cards. I finally got moved to another table and things were looking up, but unfortunately I took a couple of bad beats. First, I had a pair of jacks outdrawn by sevens and in the end, my A-6 was crushed by A-3 when the guy spiked a three.

Overall, I am happy with how I played. I didn’t make any serious mistakes to get myself knocked out. In fact, I made some solid plays overall and got myself out of a couple of situations that could have spelled disaster.

I have noticed a couple of things about this trip over other trips. First, I don’t seem to have the same thrill that I used to have when I played the World Series of Poker. It now seems like an old hat. About the only good thing is when I get to see some folks I know out here. There really isn’t much that is new and different out here at the Series. As a result, it almost becomes another tournament.

However, I will say that, as in past years, I have stepped up my game. This event I just played in was great for a solid player. The blinds move up slowly and you have long levels. It gives you a chance to catch some hands and play. You don’t have to play too aggressively or creatively early on. That changes some as you move onward through the event, but at least early on, you don’t have to play like a donk to have a chance.

I am now looking forward to the Limit Holdem event. As with the NL event, the levels move up slow and gives someone like myself a good chance to do well. I have cashed in two out of three Limit Holdem events I have played and I am two for two in the “first” Limit Event for the Series.

I’m now looking forward to some other events at Binions and Golden Nugget. I am hoping that I can take my solid approach to a couple of final tables and make some money. Time will tell.
