My WSOP Plans

There hasn’t been a lot of WSOP news going on as of late. The Circuit series at Harrah’s Rincon is going on, but otherwise, there really isn’t much to talk about WSOP related. So, I figured I would share my plans in regards to this summer’s World Series of Poker.

First, unless something changes soon, I will not be working for any of the major poker news companies providing coverage. Honestly, I haven’t really tried to pick up a gig this summer with anyone else. The company I worked with last year will likely not provide coverage, or will do so in a limited capacity.

This year, I plan on making a return to playing a couple of events at the WSOP. In 2006 and 2007, I played in several events and had success in the Limit Holdem event both years. This year, I will definitely play in the Limit Holdem event and maybe up to three other events. I am toying with the idea of playing in the $1,000 Stimulus special just so that I can say that I played in it, but I don’t know. I will also spend some time playing in satellites. If I can win or chop a couple of satellites, then I will obviously be able to play in more events.

Besides the Limit Holdem event, my next nearly definite event is the $1,500 HORSE event. That should be a relatively soft field overall and it is the cheapest mixed tournament that I think I can do well in besides the Limit event.

An event that I am eyeballing but have not made a decision on is the $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha event. They are doing the delayed chips format here to “simulate” rebuys but if I play, I will take the whole 4,500 to start with. There is no reason to bleed off money other than to gamble it up. Of course, I expect as much in a PLO event, but I do ok in PLO, so this may be a decent expectation tournament for me. I will wait and see what happens.

There is an Omaha 8 or Better event as the third event. I may try and satellite my way into that event and if I am not successful play in a different event I will mention in a bit. A lot of what I play will hinge on my success at the satellite tables and in the event or two that I play in. I am not going to go crazy and take enough money to cover the buy-ins for the events like I did the first two years. The only exception is the Limit Holdem event. I will cover the buy-in for that one as I have proven I can cash in that event.

A majority of my playing time outside of the World Series will be spent as it was in 2007, at the Binion’s Poker Classic. I love that series of events and look forward to trying them out this year. Right now, I am looking at playing 4 to 8 events there. I may end up playing more events, but I haven’t decided.

Another potential stop is the Venetian Deep Stack events on June 7th. There is a $550 H.O.R.S.E. event that I am toying with playing. We will see. Also, I am waiting to see the schedule for the Summer Poker Series at the Golden Nugget. I did well there in the Fall, so I think I would like to try my hand at a couple of the events during the summer. As long as they don’t conflict with the WSOP or with a couple of the Binions events that I will play, I will likely check them out. Their structures are fantastic and I really enjoy playing there.

There does not appear to be a chance that I will get a warmup event leading up to the WSOP, so I will have to use the SCOOP events over at PokerStars as a potential warmup. I am really looking forward to heading out to the WSOP and taking another crack at a bracelet and some of the other events around town. I will keep everyone updated during the event and will likely write a couple of special articles about the event.
