Are You Superstitious?

Are you superstitious? It has often been said that it is unlucky to be superstitious in poker. As we are approaching the 2009 WSOP, I wonder if any of you out there have any regular superstitions, trinkets, or routines that you go through before a tournament.

Personally, I have one routine that I go through before the beginning of most tournaments, provided that I can find the object of my routine. It stems back to the 2006 WSOP Circuit Event in Tunica, MS. Before the beginning of the third level of a Pot Limit Holdem event, I ate a hot dog. It was the most convenient thing available to me at the time. I went on to do well in the event, although I didn’t cash. I have since that time went on to eat a hot dog either before most of my events, or during the dinner break.

There is one modification that I have made based on the Bike in Los Angeles. One day, before a Limit Holdem event, I had a turkey sandwich, bag of chips, and a Dr. Pepper. I went on to cash in that event. It happened to be my first cash ever. Anytime that I play an event at the Bike, I have the same meal. Oddly enough, I have some of my best results at the Bike.

Do I really think that these routines do anything to help me? Yes and no. I don’t think that the turkey sandwich or the hot dog has anything to do with whether I will catch the right hands at the right time in a tournament. What the routine does is get me into the right frame of mind to play my event. Granted, I cannot always do this routine, so I have to find other ways to get ready. However, sometimes going with something you know will help get you in the right frame of mind to play.
